Are schools ready for the
year 2000 computer problem?
(AUGUST-1999)--
More and more schools across the country are equipped with computers for students to use, but outside of the classrooms,
computers are vital to a school's day-to-day operations. With the possible Year 2000 computer problem
fast approaching, how prepared are school districts?
"About three quarters of the schools across the country are now Y2K compliant," says Michael
Casserly, executive director of council of the Great City Schools.
"The question that all officials should be asking themselves is: Do I need to replace my
computers?" says Irene Dec, a Y2K expert with Prudential. "The Year 2000 computer problem is definitely avoidable -- but a three step approach must be taken:
Awareness assessment, and development of an action plan." School officials can now get a free Y2K step-by-step kit online at

College application-just a click away
(SEPTEMBER-1999) -- For millions of college applicants, applying to college can be both exciting and intimidating, knowing
there are dozens of forms to be filled out. To ease that stress, many students are now using on-line application services such
as CollegeLink.com. Here students can gather information about
hundreds of institutions, make decisions, and download software to fill out the applications on-line. CollegeLink then rapidly processes that information and prepares separate
applications individually tailored to each school, to keep the student from having to write out each
application one by one. The information is then sent back to the student to sign and to be
mailed with a check for the application fee. While applying to college involves plenty of time and hard work, the Internet is fast becoming a student's most valuable time-saving tool.
